The
Lao Theung (Upland Lao) are people who live on
mid-altitude mountain slopes between 300meters
and 900meters above sea level. The Khmu are
the largest group of these upland dwellers and
share the lowest standard of living amongst the
three Lao groups, often working as laborers for
the Lao Sung. For the most part, they are
farmers who grow mountain rice, coffee, tobacco
and cotton. Their villages are built near
streams, their houses have dirt floors like those
of the Hmong, but crossed roof-beams. Traditionally
they are animists. This trek provides
us the opportunity to share encounters with Khmu
and several Lao Lum villages.
Trekking

The
largest group of Lao Sung (high Lao dwellers) are
the most recent immigrants to Laos, having come
from Myanmar, Tibet and Southern China within the
last century. The Hmong live at altitudes
greater than 1000 meters above sea level. The
agricultural staples for the Hmong are dry rice
and corn grown on land cleared by slash and burn. They
also breed cattle, pigs, water buffalo and chickens. The
Hmong’s cash crop is opium – they grow
more than any other ethnic group in Laos. The
Hmong are also the most aggressive and warlike
of all sung groups and were the perfect offensive
for the CIA trained Royal Lao Government special-forces
under General Vang Pao in the 1960s and 1970s. Scores
of Hmong exited Laos following the 1975 revolutions. The
high mountains and 4 ponds that encompass this
trek provide a backdrop which begs the question:
are we happy with the load of material we clutter
our lives with or are they happier with the close
proximity of their devoted families, their simplistic
lives, and the all encompassing nature.

hour trek to the pristine surroundings of the Kuang

The
Lao Lum (Low Lao) are the Lao who have traditionally
resided in and around the Mekong River valley. They
are a subgroup of the Thai-Kadai people who live
throughout South-East Asia, southern China and
the north-eastern Indian subcontinent. Officially,
the Lao government classifies them as living between
200meters and 400meters above sea level. Lao
Lum culture traditionally consists of a sedentary,
subsistence lifestyle based on wet rice cultivation. The
Lao Lum were originally animists who adopted Theravada
Buddhism as their religion in the middle of the
first millennium AD. As we leave Luang Prabang
to Wat Pa Phon Phao, we are provided a fine opportunity
to visit numerous Lao Lum ethnic villages, including
Ban Panom, Ban Done Keo and the grave site of Henry
